Its origins are therefore uncertain, but it goes to the German nobility (including Chancellor Bismarck) the merit of having developed and disseminated this Good Giant, excellent companion dog for its gentle and docile character but also excellent guard dog and defence thanks to its ruggedness and strength.
Official breed standard, revised in 1994, gives the source of great Dane ’ ’ all ’ coupling of bullenbeisser (a German Mastiff, also called “Bull dogs”) with the hartzrude (a hunting dog and race).
